Central Vietnam to Get Container Port for Oversized Cargo Ships
Quang Ngai Province – Quang Ngai province has proposed to the Ministry of Transport a plan to build a modern general cargo and container port capable of receiving oversized and heavy cargo ships in the Dung Quat Economic Zone.
Tran Ngoc Cang, Chairman of the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee, submitted a written request to the Ministry of Transport seeking approval for investment in the construction of the container terminal.
According to Mr. Cang, the current general cargo terminals at Dung Quat Port lack synchronized investment, resulting in poor operational efficiency. Cargo transportation and the provision of shipping services at these terminals face difficulties and fail to fully utilize the potential of the deep-water port.

The Dung Quat Economic Zone is rapidly developing and attracting numerous businesses investing in large-scale projects across various sectors, including oil and gas, electricity, shipbuilding, steel rolling, mechanical engineering, wood production, petrochemicals, cement production, and woodchips. Therefore, a dedicated general cargo and container terminal is deemed necessary.
Following an inspection, the Standing Committee of the Quang Ngai Provincial Party Committee identified shortcomings in the port planning of the Dung Quat Economic Zone. There have been instances of businesses utilizing warehouses within the port area for production, causing environmental pollution and affecting the operations of other businesses.
Port management and operation also reveal inefficiencies, primarily focusing on exporting woodchips and raw materials, which are time-consuming and yield low added value. Essential goods for major projects cannot be imported at the port, resulting in wasted time and money for investors, cargo owners, and ship owners. Furthermore, despite improvements, administrative procedures sometimes create difficulties for ship owners, cargo owners, and crew members.
