The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is focusing on regional economic and trade development by upgrading its transportation and logistics networks. This not only enhances connectivity but also provides member states with opportunities to shield themselves from the impacts of geopolitical and economic volatility.
Intra-ASEAN trade contributes to member states' economic growth while offering protection against increasing global risks and tensions.
However, experts believe that ASEAN still faces many challenges, particularly in simplifying customs procedures and eliminating administrative barriers and complicated paperwork.
"Within ASEAN, we have made some progress," said Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke, emphasizing that the bloc's "open skies" policy has contributed to enhancing connectivity between countries. For maritime transport, ASEAN is digitizing ports to share information more effectively and improve competitiveness.
Mr. Loke stressed that reducing administrative procedures would benefit the entire region. "This solution not only benefits one country but also helps the whole region to develop," he affirmed.
Thailand also announced its active participation in improving regional connectivity. Specifically, the country is expanding its double-track railway network and promoting the construction of a bridge connecting the Andaman Sea with the Gulf of Thailand in the South, expected to be completed in 2028. This project will create a new international trade route and alleviate traffic congestion in the Malacca Strait.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit stated that this project will help reduce congestion while providing an alternative to existing sea routes.
